Spring 2010: Week 3

The u13 CRUSH traveled to Ankeny for their third game of the season and they put on an amazing show of skill and teamwork. After having a terrible start in their last game, they were determined to start fast and they did not disappoint. The CRUSH took control early using precise short passes and relentlessly physical play. The Ankeny team started to show signs of frustration and were called for a foul 20 yards in front of the goal. Kaleigh Haus put a nicely placed shot over the Ankeny defensive wall to the top left corner, out of reach for the Ankeny keeper. As the CRUSH continued the attack, Kaleigh put another in the back of the net with an assist going to Jenna Castle. But Ankeny had two forwards with amazing speed that started to challenge the defense. Ankeny was able to get a goal before the half on a breakaway. It was evident that even though the CRUSH were much more skilled than their opponent, if given the space, the speedy forwards would be a very dangerous threat.

The second half was much of the same as the CRUSH attacked from every angle and pushed the Ankeny forwards to the outside. The CRUSH nearly scored several times off crosses and short through passes, but their next goal would come off the head of Jenna Castle. As a shot bounced off the post Jenna would react and get a header just past the keeper. The Ankeny strategy was evident, get the ball to the space allowed to the forwards and try to get the break away goal. Even though they were able to get one more in the back of the net, keeper Maddie Roberts would make several heroic saves. With minutes left in the game, the CRUSH battled hard and Jessica Payne would completely shut down the fastest Ankeny forward. The CRUSH put another in the win column with a 3-2 victory.

The coaches were very happy witnessing the best game the CRUSH had ever played. The CRUSH consistently controlled the ball, pushed the Ankeny offense to the outside and evenly mixed up play between passing and dribbling. By mixing up play Ankeny was unable to read the attack and the CRUSH was able to create and capitalize on several scoring opportunities. Players of the game were Jenna Castle for an amazing header goal; Taylor Nelson for outstanding support and controlled passing; and Maddie Roberts for her heroic saves in goal.
